# MCP server

Empowill in your AI agent Beta

Connect your favorite AI agent to Empowill and ask your questions in plain language: how many reviews are still open, which trainings expire next quarter, how skills break down by site. The agent reads your company's data with your own Empowill account and permissions — nothing more.

Server URL https://<API host>/mcp

Private beta: available with the AI Pro plan

The MCP server is open in private beta to companies on the AI Pro plan, with an activation per company. It only reads your data. The steps may still change during the beta.

Permissions

Your data, your rights

The agent signs in as you. It only sees what you already see in Empowill, company by company, with the permissions of your role.

Statistics

Figures computed by Empowill

Counts, sums, averages and breakdowns by status, site, job or month are computed on Empowill's side, in one call, whatever the volume — the agent does not count rows by hand.

Exports

Big volumes, as files

For large lists, the agent exports a CSV or XLSX file and downloads it through a link valid for 15 minutes, instead of loading thousands of rows into the conversation.

tools your agent combines on its own — an endless range of questions answered from your data

AI Pro plan required, activation per company, permission per role

The MCP server is part of Empowill's AI Pro plan and is switched off by default. Once the AI Pro plan is part of your subscription, ask your Empowill contact to enable AI agents (MCP) for your company. Then choose who may connect an agent: only the roles that include the permission Connect an external assistant (MCP) can. No role has it by default.

Set up in four steps

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the open standard AI tools use to connect to other applications. You add Empowill once to your AI tool, sign in, and the agent can then read your Empowill data when you ask it to.

  1. Enable MCP for your company With the AI Pro plan in your subscription, ask your Empowill contact to enable AI agents (MCP) for your company. An administrator of your company then adds the permission Connect an external assistant (MCP) to the roles that may use it, in the role settings.
  2. Add Empowill to your AI tool Declare the server with its URL, https://<API host>/mcp, as described for your AI tool below.
  3. Sign in with your Empowill account Your AI tool opens the usual Empowill sign-in page, then a consent screen listing what the agent will get. Review it and click Allow.
  4. Ask your questions “How many annual reviews are still to be signed, by site?” — the agent picks the right data and tells you which company its figures come from.

Connect your AI tool

Sign-in uses standard OAuth with the Empowill client empowill-mcp: no password or key to copy into your AI tool. Supported today: Claude (claude.ai, Claude Desktop, mobile, Cowork and Claude Code), Codex CLI, VS Code with GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI and Cursor. Assistants set up by a company administrator — ChatGPT, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Gemini Enterprise, Le Chat — are planned.

Supported set it up now, as described below Planned coming later, no date yet For technical teams set up with a command or a settings file

Anthropic

Claude: claude.ai, Claude Desktop, mobile, Cowork

Supported
Setup

Added once as a custom connector, it is available on claude.ai, Claude Desktop, Cowork and the mobile apps.

  1. Open Customize > Connectors, click + then Add custom connector.
  2. Paste the server URL: https://<API host>/mcp.
  3. Open Advanced settings and set OAuth Client ID to empowill-mcp. Leave OAuth Client Secret empty.
  4. Click Add, then Connect: sign in to Empowill and click Allow.

On Claude Team and Enterprise plans, an owner first adds the connector in Organization settings > Connectors (Add > Custom > Web, same URL and advanced settings); each member then clicks Connect in Customize > Connectors. Menu names follow Anthropic's guide and may change on their side.

Claude Code

Supported For technical teams
Setup

Add the server from your terminal:

claude mcp add --transport http --client-id empowill-mcp --callback-port 33418 empowill https://<API host>/mcp
  1. In Claude Code, run /mcp, select empowill and choose Authenticate.
  2. Your browser opens the Empowill sign-in page, then the consent screen: click Allow.
  3. Back in Claude Code, the Empowill tools are ready to use.

Leave the client secret out: empowill-mcp has none. Port 33418 must be free on your computer during sign-in — it receives the authorization. To start on another of your companies than your main one, add --header "Company-Id: <company-id>"; otherwise, just ask the agent to switch company.

OpenAI

ChatGPT

Planned

An official Empowill app for ChatGPT is planned. On ChatGPT Business and Enterprise, your ChatGPT administrator will need to enable it.

Codex CLI

Supported For technical teams
Setup

Add the server, then sign in:

codex mcp add empowill --url https://<API host>/mcp --oauth-client-id empowill-mcp
codex mcp login empowill

Your browser opens the Empowill sign-in page, then the consent screen: click Allow. There is no port to configure. Keep the URL exactly as shown, without a trailing slash: the sign-in depends on it.

Or declare the server in Codex's config.toml, then run the same login command:

[mcp_servers.empowill]
url = "https://<API host>/mcp"

[mcp_servers.empowill.oauth]
client_id = "empowill-mcp"

Microsoft

Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Studio

Planned

Will be set up by your company's Microsoft 365 administrator.

VS Code with GitHub Copilot (agent mode)

Supported For technical teams
Setup

Run MCP: Open User Configuration from the Command Palette (or edit your project's .vscode/mcp.json) and add the server:

{
  "servers": {
    "empowill": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://<API host>/mcp"
    }
  }
}
  1. Start the server (MCP: List Servers, then start it), or just send a message in agent mode.
  2. VS Code asks for a Client ID: enter empowill-mcp.
  3. It then asks for a Client Secret: leave it empty.
  4. Your browser opens the Empowill sign-in page, then the consent screen: click Allow.

Port 33418 must be free on your computer during sign-in. To start over, run Authentication: Remove Dynamic Authentication Providers. On Copilot Business and Enterprise, your GitHub administrator must enable the MCP servers in Copilot policy.

Google

Gemini Enterprise (Google Workspace)

Planned

Will be set up by your company's Google Workspace administrator.

Gemini CLI

Supported For technical teams
Setup

Add the server to ~/.gemini/settings.json:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "empowill": {
      "httpUrl": "https://<API host>/mcp",
      "oauth": {
        "enabled": true,
        "clientId": "empowill-mcp",
        "redirectUri": "http://localhost:33418/oauth/callback"
      }
    }
  }
}

Start Gemini CLI with the callback port set (macOS and Linux syntax), then sign in:

OAUTH_CALLBACK_PORT=33418 gemini
/mcp auth empowill

Your browser opens the Empowill sign-in page, then the consent screen: click Allow. The callback port must be 33418 on both sides — in redirectUri and in OAUTH_CALLBACK_PORT — and free during sign-in.

Mistral

Le Chat

Planned

Cursor

Cursor

Supported For technical teams
Setup

Add the server to ~/.cursor/mcp.json (or your project's .cursor/mcp.json), with no client secret:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "empowill": {
      "url": "https://<API host>/mcp",
      "auth": {
        "CLIENT_ID": "empowill-mcp"
      }
    }
  }
}

Cursor then offers to connect to the server: sign in to Empowill and click Allow. With the desktop app, port 8787 must be free during sign-in. Cursor's web and cloud agents work too.

Other tools

Not planned

Other development tools (Zed, Windsurf, JetBrains…) are not planned for now. Using another AI tool? Tell your Empowill contact.

What your agent can do

The Empowill MCP server gives your agent ten tools. Your AI tool shows them under these names, or under their technical name (Claude Code, for example). The agent chains them on its own to answer your question. They only read, in every environment: the server creates, modifies and deletes nothing.

Tool What it does
My Empowill account
whoami
Tells which person, company and Empowill environment the connection acts as.
My companies
list_companies
Lists the companies you can access and on which MCP is enabled. The agent can read another of your companies on request, and always says which company its figures belong to.
Available data
list_resources
Explore a data type
describe_resource
Discover the data available (people, reviews, skills, trainings…) and its fields, statuses and filters.
Read records
query_resource
Reads a filtered, sorted page of records — up to 500 rows at a time.
Compute statistics
aggregate_resource
Counts, sums, averages, minimums and maximums grouped by any field, computed by Empowill in one call.
Export to a file
export_resource
Get an export
get_export
Exports every matching row to a CSV or XLSX file, prepared in the background (seconds to minutes), then hands over a download link valid for 15 minutes. Best with agents that can download and process files, such as Claude Code.
Download a file
get_file
Hands over a download link to a file you could download yourself in Empowill, such as the PDF of a review or a document made by Will, the Empowill AI assistant. Empowill checks your permissions on the file, as in the app. The link expires within minutes.
Read the API documentation
read_api_docs
Reads the public Empowill API documentation, this developer portal, part by part: to help you write a script or an integration. It reads no data of your company.
Good to know. Replies from the server are in English and dates in UTC: the agent converts them or tells you so. Exported files use the labels of your own Empowill language.

Security & privacy

Your permissions, not more. The agent reads Empowill as you would — and only when you allow it.

Permissions

Your own rights

Every call is made on your behalf and checked against your Empowill permissions, on companies where MCP is enabled and only if your role there includes Connect an external assistant (MCP).

Scope

Read-only

The server offers no tool that creates, modifies or deletes data, in any environment: your agent reads Empowill, it never writes to it.

Access

A key limited to MCP

The access granted to your agent only works on the MCP server, not on the rest of the Empowill API. It lasts one hour and renews itself; a connection left unused for 30 days expires.

Control

Revocable at any time

Signing out of Empowill ends the access of your connected agents; you can also remove the server from your AI tool. When MCP is switched off for a company, access stops within a minute.

Approval

Ask before reading

We recommend setting your AI tool to ask for your approval before Read records, Compute statistics, Export to a file and Download a file, which bring employee data into the conversation or into a file, and to always allow the discovery tools and Read the API documentation.

Personal data

Only what your task needs

Your company's data is employees' personal data, and the conversation goes through your AI provider's service: only ask for what your task needs, and check any use against your company's personal data policy with your DPO.

Questions about security, compliance or personal data? Contact your Empowill representative: they will put you in touch with the right person.
